When we look to hire new people, referrals are gold.
The same goes for applying for a job. People often ask people they know and trust what they think of a brand or what they’ve heard about working for a certain company.
Well… we are looking for two Stockyard Designers to join our team. But rather than regurgitate the usual bland job description, we thought we would turn it back to our team.
Why do they love doing what they do each day?
We recently spoke to Tom Austin and Sam Clements about why they love being Stockyard Designers. Together, they came up with five reasons why YOU should become a Stockyard Designer:
1. Stop the family fights!
We are both sons of sheep graziers, so sheepwork is in our DNA. We remember what it was like as kids working in the yards. Our parents saved the sheepwork for school holidays, so they had extra hands – yet don’t they always say, don’t ever work with kids or animals?! Every family argument started in the sheepyards! We are passionate about livestock – and love that we have an opportunity to make our industry more attractive to the next generation by making stockwork quicker, easier and safer than ever before.
2. Work with rural people
We’re not biased…but working with rural Australians is great! They’re like-minded, down-to-earth, good-hearted people. There is always a good story to hear. Being a good judge of character and understanding what our customers want is also an important part of this role, so being able to relate to our customers makes our job that much easier.
3. Ability to be creative
Growing up on a farm, we were always taught to be resourceful. That has really translated into our drive to solve problems. Drawing on our understanding of commercial sheep and cattle operations, and our experience in animal psychology, we love having the ability to be creative in the design. It’s very satisfying when we see how much of a positive impact a design has on the lives of our customers.
4. No design experience required
Neither of us had stockyard design experience when we started with Atlex – and we had never heard of AutoCAD or a Robotic Theodolite! However, no other company had more experience. We knew that we were in safe hands when working with Ian who had over 30 years experience. Atlex has very detailed procedures in place, and we continue to improve them each day.
5. Continue to learn and grow
We both love innovation. In this role we talk to progressive farmers (our customers) on a daily basis; attend Field Days and other industry events regularly, and work closely with progressive brands such as Gallagher or Te Pari who keep us on our toes. This, combined with Atlex’s consistent focus on innovation and product development, means we continue to learn and grow as individuals. We never want to be stagnant!

We are looking for someone who has grown up on a commercial sheep or cattle property.
Specifically, our ideal candidate is:
- Passionate about rural Australia
- Outcome-focused with a keen eye for detail and drive to solve problems
- Computer literate with an analytical mind
